Children's Ministry Director — Part-Time (20 Hours/Week)

Monte Vista Presbyterian Church is looking for a Director of Children’s Ministry who loves Jesus, loves kids, and loves people.

This is more than a Sunday morning position. We’re looking for a relational, energetic, and spiritually mature leader who wants to build meaningful relationships with children and families, develop volunteers, create engaging ministry experiences, and help shape the future of our Children’s Ministry.

Our ideal candidate is a self-starter and people person who sees ministry as something that happens both inside and outside the church walls. You’ll have the opportunity to know children and families by name, connect with our local community, partner with our preschool, develop leaders, and create experiences that help kids grow in their relationship with Jesus.

• Be a highly visible, welcoming presence on Sunday mornings in worship and Children’s Ministry.
• Get to know children and families personally—their names, their stories, and their needs.
• Build relationships with families both at church and throughout the local community.
• Help welcome and connect new families to Monte Vista.
• Attend Monte Vista Preschool events as requested and look for opportunities to strengthen relationships with preschool families.
• Lead and develop engaging, biblically grounded Family Time experiences using creative teaching and age-appropriate object lessons.
• Teach and participate in Sunday School and other Children’s Ministry programs, both on and off campus.
• Create an environment where every child feels seen, known, safe, included, and loved.
• Be sensitive and flexible in supporting children with different abilities, personalities, and social needs.

• Recruit, encourage, train, schedule, and mentor adult and student volunteers.
• Help volunteers discover and use their God-given gifts.
• Build a strong, positive Children’s Ministry team culture.
• Partner with the Associate Pastor to coordinate Children’s and Youth Ministry planning.
• Collaborate with the Children’s Ministry Elder and volunteer team to dream about the future of Children’s Ministry.
• Help develop a creative, engaging curriculum that utilizes the strengths and gifts of the ministry team.
• Stay curious about effective and innovative approaches to Christian ministry for children and families.
• Help develop a ministry vision that aligns with Monte Vista’s mission and values.

• Coordinate Sunday School, nursery care, staffing, volunteer schedules, and weekly programming.
• Plan and oversee major seasonal experiences, including Vacation Bible School (VBS) and quarterly family events.
• Communicate consistently and creatively with parents through email, text, social media, and other appropriate channels.
• Maintain clear communication with church staff, volunteers, parents, and preschool leadership.
• Participate in weekly staff meetings.
• Partner with the Children’s Ministry Elder to manage the ministry budget.
• Prepare monthly and annual ministry reports for the Session.
• Ensure all Children’s Ministry programs follow established safety and child-protection policies.

• Have a vibrant personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a genuine sense of calling to ministry with children.
• Love Scripture and are excited about helping children develop a lifelong relationship with Jesus.
• Have previous experience working in children’s ministry, children's programming, education, or a related setting.
• Understand the social, emotional, and cognitive development of children.
• Are naturally relational and enjoy connecting with both children and adults.
• Are a confident communicator who can build trust with parents, volunteers, and church leadership.
• Are a self-starter who can take an idea from “What if we tried this?” to actually making it happen.
• Are organized and able to manage multiple programs, people, and priorities.
• Are comfortable using computers, email, social media, and other technology.
• Understand and respect the Presbyterian tradition and Monte Vista Presbyterian Church’s mission.
• Are flexible, compassionate, and willing to meet children where they are.
• Are comfortable getting involved—whether that means teaching a Bible lesson, organizing volunteers, talking with a parent, or jumping into a silly game with kids.
• Are willing and able to be physically active and participate in fun, age-appropriate activities with children.

This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and families in the Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park community while working alongside a supportive church staff and volunteer team.

• Regular Sunday morning presence required, with additional hours scheduled throughout the week for ministry programming, meetings, planning, outreach, and events.
